McNeill Biplane Hangar

mcneill hangar

Construction of the McNeill Hangar in Fort Edmonton Park was completed in early 2008. It was built to house Fort Edmonton Park’s replica Avro Avian Bi-plane. It is also a significant piece of Edmonton’s aviation history.

The original McNeill Hangar was constructed in 1920 by Edmonton Airplane Company owners, John "Jock" McNeill and Captain Keith Tailyour. The company leased a corner of the Hagmann Estate in the Summerwilde neighborhood, and as the “gateway to the north”, the aviation business in Edmonton began to take off, transporting mail , passengers, and freight. The farmland on which the hangar was situated was taken over by the City in 1923 for tax arrears. Over the next few several years, the McNeill Hangar was in continual use until the Hagmann Estate was licensed as the first municipally owned and operated public air harbour in Canada, and Blatchford Field Hangar opened on the old Hagmann site in 1927.
