Dinner Auction (Taste of History)
"The
buffalo, as any trapper or trader would tell you, is a highly sociable beast
with a mighty appetite. Many centuries of roughing it on the prairies taught
the buffalo that grazing is a most commendable and efficient means of acquiring
nourishment." (1)
Based on the model of the buffalo, the first annual dinner auction was held on Saturday, July 8, 1995 in conjunction with Fort Edmonton's bicentennial. It was a fundraising event designed to play-up on the naturally sociable and hungry human animal.
Mark your calendars for Taste of History 2008 - Jesse's Back! Friday, September 5, 2008 at Fort Edmonton Park. Put on your best bib and tucker, hop aboard the old steam train and blaze a trail back in time to the Wild, Wild West! Watch yer back as yer ridin' that big black snake through them badlands. Never know when a band of brothers is about to bring that iron horse to a stop, climb on board and kick up a row. (We hear the James Gang's been showing their ugly mugs round these parts!) Or, when the local Sherrif and his deputies will hop on, grab the biggest toad in the pond and toss him in the calaboose. Either way, don't be afeared - just be ready to fork over til ya don't have a tail feather left!
Providin' yer able to get there in one piece, jump off at the whistle stop and get a wiggle on over to the Fort. Follow them gunslingers and mail-order cowboys across the boardwalk til you come to that high-falutin fandango, a Taste of History 2008. Bend yer elbow for some John Barleycorn, investigate the Fine as Cream Gravy auction prizes, grab some of the best grub this side of the Mississippi, and then, once the sun sinks, grab that special someone for a stomp around the dance floor! Have yourself a hog-killin' time! (Well, not literally, please.)
