Although each of our three designers has an individual style, all of our horse designs have had to be co-ordinated and worked within PTC requirements. As if that was not difficult enough, Richard Bechtel was given an additional challenge when asked to design a horse for a body block that had originally been blocked-up for an entirely different horse! Richard is exceptional at meeting specific requests and had no trouble working within the fixed dimensions. Not only that, Richard produces quality work within a very speedy timeframe. Very quickly Richard gave us a design for a horse with lots of jewels, yet another design constraint we imposed on Richard.
When designing a horse, the designer must look at the horses that are to be nearby before determining such features as head and leg positions, trappings and colour. In some cases, sponsors have had some specific requests, although they must fall within the confines of historical authenticity. The artist begins with outlining the body first, later adding the head, neck, legs and tail, in order. The sketch is next shown to the prospective sponsor before detail work on the trappings is completed. Finalizing the colours found in the trappings is usually the last step in the design process. Indeed, our painters have often made wonderful suggestions as they add the finishing touches to the horses.
