In 2001 Bob Cherot designed and carved a mate for Buddy. Take special note of Merrylegs' charming head - Bob is especially proud of it. In fact his head became the model, used as a standard by many subsequent volunteer carvers. Merrylegs, about the same size as Buddy, will also ride on the inner row of the Fort Edmonton Park Carousel.

Taking lessons from Chuck Kaparich of A Carousel for Missoula fame, Bob has developed into a master carver of considerable stature, creating horses for machines both in the United States and Canada. It goes without saying that the Fort Edmonton Park Carousel would never have happened without Bob's enthusiasm, expert advice and never ending help.

Jan Archbold, Lauren Baker and Doug Warren, all either staff or volunteer Fort Edmonton Park personnel, took holidays from their jobs in October 2001 to paint Merrylegs at the Bette Largent painting workshop held at the Park. These accomplished artists had no difficulty achieving the dappled finish, considered by many to be the most difficult colour treatment to attain.

Merrylegs gets his stable name from a dapple pony in Anna Sewell's classic novel, "Black Beauty".
