Located between them, Lily must hold her own with both the Armoured Lead Horse and Draws Much Blood. Despite her simple trappings, the detail in her wild head and mane will insure that she is not overpowered by other horses on the Fort Edmonton Park Carousel. Her beautifully carved orange lilies are reminiscent of western wood lilies, so familiar to those of us who have grown up in Western Canada. Can't you just picture Lily running free and wild out on the prairies?

Dubbed the "dynamic duo," Gus Buysen and Lauren Baker have teamed up to carve Lily. Other carvers feel that in Lily they have both received their just desserts, for it is Lauren who has designed many of the details in so many of the horses that have challenged our carvers, and it is Gus who has brought a seemingly never-ending supply of body blocks to the carvers for their execution. There just never seems to be an end in sight.

We were saddened by Gus's unexpected death in November 2003. Lauren was determined to complete carving on Lily herself and did so, with some help from Doug Warren, in July 2005. She is looking forward to painting this magnificent horse.
