A Sharon Abbott design, the theme of the carousel horse Blink is based on David Thompson - the great map maker and fur trader who energetically explored the trade routes from the St. Lawrence to the Pacific Ocean in the late 1700s and early 1800s. We show his brass sextant, a compass and a pan that he put mercury in to create an artificial horizon in order to exactly locate wherever he was. The paddle signifies the many trips he made with the voyageurs while he traveled first, for the Hudson's Bay Company, and then for the North West Company. The saddle is based on a Cree saddle from the 1800s.
David Thompson is credited with putting a British flag at the north end of the Columbia River and claiming the land for King George III in the race with the Americans to establish ownership over the lands by the Pacific Ocean.
Mark, Ammetta, Robert and Ed, well known for their carving, were a great carving team!
