No carousel would be complete without a stargazer. Designed by both Sharon Abbott and Lauren Baker, our stargazer resembles a Stein and Goldstein original that still rides their celebrated carousel in Central Park in New York City. But Lauren has given the horse new trappings, ones that have been inspired by two master carvers from the Golden Age of Carousels (1885-1925), Dentzel and Cernigliaro. Notice the fancy gold harnesses that appear on this horse. "Cherni" was known particularly for the fancy harnesses, garlands and drapery that appeared on the horses he carved for Dentzel.
Our Renaissance man, Doug Warren, has carved this pleasing horse. Doug, an engineer by profession, is a local bird carving instructor, skilled in the use of such small tools as knives, files and single-hair paint brushes. At the same time, he gives us needed advice on such far-flung subjects as time management and handicap accessibility. Doug carves with a group that gets together to work on the horses three times a week at the Park and is unstinting in the help he extends to other, less experienced carvers.
