Angel was inspired by a picture of an outstanding carousel horse found on a calendar. Unfortunately we have no record of its original carver although the calendar horse's gold mane indicates that it might well have been Marcus Illions. Lauren Baker has changed the mane to make the horse more befitting one carved in the Philadelphia style.
Note the secondary figure tucked under the saddle cantle. Saddlepacks were frequently placed in such a position to lend support to the back of the saddle, preventing damage to it when the rider leans back. Such packs were common on PTC horses, although this little cherub is particularly appealing. The cherub, along with the fringe on Angel's rump and rope around his chest, will be finished in gold paint.
Angel's carver, Ben Fehst, is carefully recreating a beautiful angel that his daughter, Elizabeth Burgess, has lovingly drawn for her father to carve. Gilded and bejeweled, this roached mane jumper promises to be one of the most beloved horses on our carousel.
