Animals

One thing that is often overlooked as helping put the "living" in Living History Museum is the animals. Not the human animals, but the furry, feather-bearing ones.

gobble gobbleFort Edmonton Park is full of animals. Not only do we have horses, but we have oxen, miniature goats, chickens, turkeys, pigs, ponies, cats, geese and sheep!

Next time you are down in Fort Edmonton Park, look around for our furry friends. The oxen usually are in the Fort complex and the goats, chickens, turkeys, geese, pigs and sheep are on 1885 Street. The horses are in pastures scattered around the Park and the ponies are by the Trading Post outside of the Fort complex.

The turkeys are affectionately referred to as the 1885 Street gang. They walk in and out of all the buildings like they own them. If you're not careful, they might even try to steal your candy right out of your hand!

This year we were fortunate to have one ewe have 3 surviving triplets, one ewe with twins and one with "an only child". Every fall, after the Park is closed for the season, the sheep are let loose with the responsibility of trimming the grass.
